The Wiki of the Dead

Sophie Richards was a researcher of the DBR Corporation, and the fiancé of Thomas Rogan during the events of the Curien Mansion incident. While the player's performance would determine her survival in the first game, canonically she survived, married, and had a daughter with Rogan, whom they named Lisa Rogan.

Story

Engaged to Thomas Rogan and acquainted with his partner "G", Sophie worked as a researcher for the DBR Corporation under Dr. Curien. When Curien unleashed his creations throughout his mansion, which resulted in the death of many of his staff, Sophie immediately called Rogan for help. When the agents arrived, they found Sophie lying unconconscious in the mansion's front courtyard, but she was actually playing dead to avoid detection until help had arrived. But as soon as she dropped the act upon seeing them, she was captured and taken back to the mansion by The Hangedman. Fighting their way inside, the two agents managed to find her, but were suddenly ambushed by The Chariot before they could take her to safety, upon which the creature attacked and gravely injured Sophie. After defeating the monster, Rogan and G attend to her, who tells them to go on and stop Curien prevent a disaster. She passes out shortly afterward, much to Rogan's grief.

After Rogan and G accomplish their mission, with Curien and the Magician subdued, Rogan bids Sophie a heartbroken farewell before taking his leave. The player's score at the end of the game would determine Sophie's fate. The Neutral Ending would simply have the player look back at the mansion, leaving players to assume that Sophie had died. The Bad Ending takes the player back inside the mansion, where Sophie is shown standing jaded as a reanimated zombie. In the game's canonical Good Ending, Sophie is instead shown miraculously alive and well, running toward the screen exclaiming "Thank you!"

Sophie was not mentioned in The House of the Dead 2, where Rogan and G were only featured in cameo appearances. But at the time of The House of the Dead III, she and Rogan had married and had a daughter named Lisa. After Rogan goes missing on a mission, Lisa promises her worried mother that she would find him and bring him home. Asking G for help, they locate the facility where Rogan was last seen. Lisa reveals that she has a had a strained relationship with her father, who always put his work ahead of his family, and his time away often worried them. While she acts stubbornly toward him, she appears to have a much closer relationship with her mother. Because Lisa was not aware of the kind of work her father was involved in, she did not seem to realize that he was a well-intentioned, protective, and very loving father, or the kinds of horrors that he was trying to protect his family from.

Debate

At the time of The House the Dead III's release, there had been debate whether or not it was Sophie who was Lisa Rogan's mother. None of the first game's endings had been confirmed as canon (whether Sophie had survived or perished), and while Lisa refers to her mother often, she never actually mentions her by name. Unlike her father, Lisa has blonde hair, leading many players to believe that Sophie was, in fact, the mother, but it could not be confirmed.

In an interview with The Website of the Dead, series director Takashi Oda confirmed that canonically, Sophie not only survived The Curien Mansion Incident, but that she is indeed the mother of Lisa Rogan[1].

Trivia

  • Sophie's zombie state is slightly altered in the Sega Saturn console port. In the original arcade version, she had a tint of paleness to her complexion and her eyes were completely white with something (presumably blood) dripping down her mouth. In the console port, her eyes have pupils with bags under them and her skin has a green tint.
  • In the early development stages of the first House of the Dead, Sophie's name was Carole. She was also originally a villain.
  • There was an idea to make Sophie a boss in The House of the Dead 2, but the idea was scrapped early in the planning phase.
  • She shares her name with Sophie Richards, a saveable character from "Dead Rising". The two don't seem to have much in common, aside from short hairstyles, and being characters in zombie games.
